Centre for Environmental Studies

NITIE, being an institute of national repute, with a unique course dealing with environmental issues, would like to take the lead and create research focus in the area of environmental management and sustainability. This is the context in which the "Centre for Environmental Studies" was initiated at NITIE. Beneficiaries of the Centre will be students, industries, government, international agencies, academia, NGOs and society at large. Focus of the centre is Research.

CES was started in November 2009 with focus on research in three areas (Ecosystem management, Business and sustainable development and Environmental policy), 18 objectives and recruitment of 2 M.Sc. research staff and 1 secretary. The Board approved CES for 10 years (129th Board meeting on 24.8.2009, item 129B.3). Financial outlay of 2.5 crore was requested and approved for the first 5 years. The Centre identified 3 key stakeholders: the environment, industry and government and objectives were framed for each stakeholder. CES has 3 staff employed at post graduate and graduate level.

Supporting Consolidation, Replication and Up-Scaling of Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Technologies for India (SARASWATI)

SARASWATI is a sponsored research project entitled 'Supporting consolidation, replication and up-scaling of sustainable wastewater treatment and reuse technologies for India", SARASWATI, sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST) as a part of European Union (EU) DST under the framework of Indian European Union Science & Technology Cooperation Agreement was sanctioned in January, 2013. It is a part of an overall project with 7 Indian and 7 European partners. The project is for a duration of 3 years with budget outlay of Rs.46,32,000/-.

The project Focuses on

  • Status of sewage treatment in India
  • Evaluation of current wastewater technology in India
  • Demonstration & evaluation of latest European technologies on pilot scale in India

Case studies and detailed evaluation on existing Sewage Treatment Plants technology across western Indian states (Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh) is to be conducted by National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai.

A comprehensive documentation of existing wastewater treatment, reclamation and reuse technologies in India

An independent technical (including hygienic and environmental aspects) and socioeconomic evaluation of selected technologies. Pilot scale studies ofproven technologies in India.

To suggest sustainable strategies, provide replicating tools and develop guidelines for technology application and design.
